Abstract

Academic libraries commonly employ commercial data loggers for continuous monitoring of microclimate conditions of collections. Yet, for small and medium-sized academic libraries, the proposition of sustainable microclimate monitoring and the initiation of a collection preservation program requires considerable investment of time, personnel, and funding. Under the pressure of shrinking budgets, personnel, and efforts to implement sustainable evidence-based practices, small academic libraries must make critical decisions regarding collection preservation and management. The present case examines the success of a year-long initiative implementing a low-tech, low-cost environmental assessment strategy leading to informed decision-making and justification of additional environmental monitoring. The strategy aims at finding balance between cost-effectiveness and sustainable preservation practice in a small-sized academic library.
